Terms and Conditions of Sale
Soke Engineering Ltd. Version 2026-10-16
1. Seller and scope
These terms are between you and Soke Engineering Ltd ("we", "us"), a company registered in England and Wales, company number 16561243, registered office 5 Jayne Gardens, Crowland, Peterborough, England, PE6 0DH. VAT number GB 530 1762 23.
Contact: info@soke.engineering. Emails about an order come from orders@soke.engineering.
These terms apply when you buy a Knokke film scanner from soke.engineering. The Korova software that runs the scanner is licensed separately: see section 13.
2. Orders and when the contract is made
- Placing an order is an offer to buy. The contract is made when we email your order confirmation, which happens once your deposit has been paid.
- We may decline or cancel an order, and refund in full everything you have paid, if: the product is not available; the price or description shown was clearly wrong; we cannot deliver to your address; or we reasonably suspect fraud.
- Pricing errors. If we find an error in the price of your order, we will tell you and you may either go ahead at the correct price or cancel for a full refund.
- Stock. The site shows Knokke as in stock or out of stock. While it is in stock, the shipping time shown when you order is the one that applies to your order. Scanners are held for you while you are on the payment page.
- You may order up to 5 scanners in one order.
3. Deposit and balance
What the deposit is. A deposit of £200 per scanner is paid when you order. It reserves your scanner and comes off the price: it is part payment, not an extra charge.
The balance. The rest of the price is the balance. It is charged to the same card on the balance due date, which is shown before you pay the deposit, on the payment page and in your order confirmation. The balance is charged before your order ships. By paying the deposit you authorise us to charge the balance to that card on that date, and your card is saved by our payment provider, Stripe, for that purpose only. We email a reminder 3 days before.
If you order on or after the balance due date, the balance is charged straight after the deposit.
Refund of the deposit. The deposit is always refundable.
- Until your order ships you can cancel for any reason, and everything you have paid, the deposit and the balance if it has been charged, is refunded in full.
- Once your order has shipped, cancelling means returning the scanner. Section 9 says how long you have. The price you paid, deposit included, is refunded.
If the balance is not paid. If the charge fails, or your bank asks you to confirm it, we email you a link to pay. Your order is held and does not ship until the balance is paid. If the balance is still unpaid 14 days after the balance due date, we may cancel the order and refund the deposit.
If we are late. Shipping times are estimates (section 6). If production or shipping is delayed we will tell you by email. You can cancel for a full refund at any time before your order ships, however long the delay. We do not charge the balance earlier than the balance due date, and if we move that date later we will tell you.
If we cancel. If we cancel your order, everything you have paid is refunded.
4. Prices and payment
- Prices are in pounds sterling (GBP). Your card provider converts if your card is in another currency, at its rate and with any fee it charges.
- Payment is by credit or debit card, through Stripe. We do not see or store your full card number.
- The full price of your order (scanners, shipping and any UK VAT) is shown before you pay the deposit and again on the payment page. That is the price you pay, even if our prices change afterwards.
- The price depends on where the order is delivered, because shipping and tax differ by country. The delivery country cannot be changed on the payment page; go back and choose it again to see the right price.
- The deposit is charged when you order and the balance on the balance due date (section 3).
5. VAT, duties and import charges
- Delivered in the UK (and the Isle of Man): the price includes UK VAT at 20%. VAT is part of each payment: you receive a VAT invoice for your deposit, and the invoice for the balance shows the VAT in the balance.
- Delivered anywhere else: no UK VAT is charged. The price does not include import VAT, sales tax, customs duty, or the carrier's clearance or brokerage fees in your country.
- For deliveries outside the UK the goods are shipped "delivered at place" (DAP). You are the importer. You are responsible for paying any import VAT, duty and clearance fees, which are normally collected from you by the carrier before or on delivery. We have no control over these charges and cannot tell you what they will be.
- If you refuse to pay import charges and the parcel is returned to us, section 6 applies.
- Import charges you have paid to your own customs are not ours to refund. If you return a scanner you may be able to reclaim them from your customs authority.
6. Shipping and delivery
- When you order you choose a shipping service from those we offer for your country, with its price and expected delivery time. The price covers the carrier's charge and our packing, and is shown before you pay.
- Every service we offer is tracked. We email you the tracking number when your order ships.
- Orders ship in the order they were placed. Shipping and delivery times are estimates, not guarantees. Section 3 says what you can do if we are late.
- Your address. You are responsible for giving a complete and correct delivery address and a phone number the carrier can reach you on. Tell us before we ship if it changes. We cannot change the delivery country after you order, because the price depends on it.
- We do not deliver to PO boxes or to parcel-forwarding addresses.
- Failed delivery. If the parcel comes back to us because the address was wrong, nobody could receive it, it was not collected, or import charges were not paid, we will contact you. We will either send it again at your cost, or cancel the order and refund what you paid less our actual shipping costs both ways and any charges the carrier makes us pay.
- The carrier may add a surcharge for remote areas; if it does we will tell you before we ship.
7. Risk and ownership
- Risk. The scanner is your responsibility from the moment it is delivered to the address you gave, to you or to someone you have asked to receive it. Until then loss or damage in transit is ours to sort out (see section 12).
- Ownership. You own the scanner once we have received payment in full, deposit and balance.
8. International sales
- We deliver to the countries offered in the order form.
- Knokke is sold with a UK, EU or US plug. You may choose any plug for any country; choosing one that suits your sockets is up to you.
- Knokke carries the UKCA, CE and FCC marks. You are responsible for making sure it may lawfully be imported into and used in your country if that country requires anything else.
- Customs may open, delay or hold a parcel. We are not responsible for delays caused by customs.
- Warranty service is carried out by us in the UK (section 11).
9. Returns (change of mind)
This section is about returning a scanner you do not want. Faults are section 11. Before your order ships, anyone may cancel for a full refund (section 3); this section applies once it has shipped.
Everyone. Returns of non-defective products are accepted within 14 days of delivery. You are responsible for the return shipping costs.
Consumers in the UK and Europe. If your order was delivered in the UK, the Isle of Man, the Channel Islands, an EU country, Norway, Iceland or Liechtenstein, you have a legal right to cancel without giving a reason. It runs from the day you order until 14 days after the day you receive your Knokke. You may open the scanner and try it, as you could in a shop. Your refund includes the standard cost of delivery to you.
Everywhere else. The product must be unused and returned in its original condition and packaging. The price you paid for the product, deposit included, is refunded; the original shipping charge is not.
Business customers (section 17) do not have a change-of-mind return right.
If the law of your country gives you more than this, you have that as well. Nothing in these terms takes away rights that the consumer law of your country gives you and that cannot be excluded by agreement.
10. How to return a scanner
- Email info@soke.engineering with your order number and say you are returning it. We reply with a return number. Do not send anything back without one.
- Send the scanner back within 14 days of telling us, to our registered office: Soke Engineering Ltd, 5 Jayne Gardens, Crowland, Peterborough, PE6 0DH, United Kingdom.
- Send everything that came in the box: the scanner, the power supply and the USB cable, in the original packaging.
- You pay for the return postage. Use a tracked, insured service; the scanner is your responsibility until it reaches us. From outside the UK, mark the parcel as returned goods so that we are not charged import duty; any duty we are charged is deducted from your refund.
- UK and Europe (as listed in section 9): if the scanner comes back damaged, incomplete or showing use beyond what is needed to try it, we may reduce the refund by the loss in value. Everywhere else: if it is not unused and in its original condition and packaging, we may refuse the return.
- We refund within 14 days of receiving the scanner, to the card you paid with, and issue a credit note for the invoice.
11. Faulty products and warranty
- Warranty. Knokke is covered by our warranty for 12 months from delivery. If we have no delivery date from the carrier, delivery is taken to be 7 days after shipping.
- What it covers. Faults in materials or workmanship that appear in normal use.
- What we do. We repair the scanner or, if we cannot, replace it. If we can do neither within a reasonable time, we refund the price. A repaired or replacement scanner is covered for the rest of the original 12 months.
- How to claim. Email info@soke.engineering with your order number or the scanner's serial number and a description of the fault. We may ask for photos, a video or log files from Korova, and will often be able to fix a problem remotely. Do not send a scanner back without a return number.
- Shipping. For a fault confirmed under warranty we pay for shipping both ways within the UK. From other countries you pay to send it to us and we pay to send it back; you are responsible for any import charges on its return.
- What it does not cover. Damage from dropping, impact, liquid, or use outside the conditions in the documentation; use with a power supply other than the one supplied; opening, modifying or repairing the scanner other than as we instruct; normal wear; film, and any loss of or damage to film; faults in your computer, in cables you supply, or in third-party software.
- A later owner. The warranty stays with the scanner. If you sell or give it to someone else, they may claim under it for what remains of the 12 months.
- Your legal rights. The warranty is in addition to your legal rights. If you are a consumer in the UK, the Consumer Rights Act 2015 says goods must be as described, fit for purpose and of satisfactory quality, and gives you remedies (including a right to reject faulty goods within 30 days) that this warranty does not reduce.
12. Damaged or not working on arrival
- Check the parcel when it arrives. If the box is visibly damaged, say so to the carrier and photograph it before opening.
- Tell us within 7 days of delivery if the scanner arrived damaged or does not work, with photos of the damage and of the packaging. Keep all the packaging: the carrier may want to inspect it, and we need it for the claim.
- We will repair or replace it, or refund you, at no cost to you, including shipping.
- Reporting later than this does not remove your legal rights or your warranty, but it may make it harder to show that the damage happened in transit.
13. Software
Knokke is operated with our Korova software. Korova is licensed, not sold, under its own user agreement, which is shown on the download page at soke.engineering/download and which you accept when you download it. That agreement, not these terms, governs your use of Korova.
14. Product specifications
- We may make minor changes to the product during production (components, finish, packaging) that do not materially affect what it does.
- Photographs, renders and videos on the site are illustrative. Colour and finish may differ slightly.
- Published performance figures (scan speed, resolution, colour depth) were measured under our test conditions. Your results depend on the film, your computer and your settings.
15. Compatibility
Before you order, check that your film and your computer meet the requirements. Those for the computer are kept up to date on the Korova download page. At the time of writing:
- Film: Knokke scans 35mm film with 36 × 24 mm frames, in strips of at least 3 frames. It does not scan other formats.
- USB: one USB 3.0 (5 Gbps) port. Knokke does not work at all over USB 2.0 or slower.
- Computer: Windows 10 or 11, 64-bit (not Windows on ARM); or macOS 15 Sequoia or later, Apple Silicon or Intel; or Linux, 64-bit x86, Ubuntu 24.04 or later or Arch.
A scanner that does not work with film or a computer outside these requirements is not faulty.
16. Our liability
What we never exclude. Nothing in these terms limits or excludes our liability for death or personal injury caused by our negligence, for fraud or fraudulent misrepresentation, for breach of your legal rights as a consumer, or for anything else the law does not allow us to limit.
If you are a consumer. We are responsible for loss or damage you suffer that is a foreseeable result of our breaking this contract or failing to use reasonable care. We are not responsible for loss that was not foreseeable. We supply Knokke for domestic and private use; if you use it for business, the business terms below apply.
If you are a business customer. To the extent the law allows:
- we are not liable for loss of profit, business, contracts, revenue, anticipated savings, data or goodwill, for business interruption, or for any indirect or consequential loss;
- our total liability for an order is limited to the price you paid for that order;
- all terms implied by law are excluded, other than those that cannot be.
Film. Film is irreplaceable, and you use Knokke with your film at your own risk. We are not liable for any loss of or damage to film or to the images on it, except where the law does not allow us to exclude this.
17. Business customers and consumers
- A consumer is an individual buying wholly or mainly for purposes outside their trade, business, craft or profession. Everyone else, for example a film lab, a studio or a company, is a business customer.
- If you give a company name or a tax number when you order, we treat the order as a business purchase.
- For business customers, wherever they are: the deposit is refundable until the order ships, as for everyone (section 3); the change-of-mind return right in section 9 does not apply after that; section 16's business terms apply; and the warranty in section 11 is the only warranty given.
18. Intellectual property
The Knokke and Korova names and logos, the design of the scanner, the software, firmware and documentation, and the content of this website belong to Soke Engineering Ltd or its licensors. Buying a scanner gives you ownership of that scanner, and no other rights.
19. Your data
We use the details you give us to fulfil your order, to take payment and to support your scanner. Payments are handled by Stripe. Our Privacy Policy (soke.engineering/privacy-policy) explains what we hold and why. We only send you news if you asked for it.
20. Events outside our control
We are not in breach of these terms, or liable for delay or failure, where it is caused by something outside our reasonable control: for example carrier disruption, customs action, natural disaster, epidemic, war, government restriction, power or network failure, or a shortage of components. We will tell you, and do what we reasonably can to limit the delay. You can still cancel for a full refund at any time before your order ships (section 3).
21. Changes to these terms
The terms that apply to your order are the ones in force, and that you accepted, when you placed it. We record the version you accepted. We may change these terms for future orders by publishing a new version on this website.
22. Governing law and disputes
These terms are governed by the law of England and Wales, and the courts of England and Wales have jurisdiction. If you are a consumer living elsewhere, you keep the protection of the mandatory consumer law of your country, and you may bring proceedings in your own courts where that law gives you the right to.
Please contact us first: most problems are quicker to sort out by email.
23. General
- If part is invalid. If a court finds part of these terms unenforceable, the rest stay in force.
- No waiver. If we do not enforce a right straight away, we can still enforce it later.
- Transfer. We may transfer our rights and obligations to another organisation, for example if the business is sold; this will not affect your rights.
- Third parties. Nobody other than you and us has rights under this contract, apart from a later owner's rights under the warranty.
- Whole agreement. These terms and your order confirmation are the whole agreement between us about your order.
- Notices. We contact you at the email address you gave with your order. Contact us at info@soke.engineering or at our registered office.
